Before Being Vegan
Do You Eat At The Usual Junk Food Places As A Vegan??
If you are Vegan FTA, I have a “simple” question… Would you eat the plant-based options at KFC, McDonalds, Burger King type junk food; And are any of them different for you?
Are you less of a vegan to eat at non-vegan junk food places that serve almost entirely meat and dairy products? Or are you that piece of data showing franchises that vegan fast food can be tasty and popular too?
When I think of these questions for myself, I understand I am being a hypocrite! Of course, my preference is to either home cook or only eat at vegan places.
We all know the reality of doing so is way more time consuming, and financially difficult to be feasible, but where do you bend?
Initially I resisted any non-vegetarian places, and experienced how incorporated I was with junk food, especially when driving around. If I do my grocery shop at a typical supermarket, they have meat and dairy. So does that mean I stop shopping at Tesco’s altogether and just go online? This mental juggling act of altruistic veganism FTA compared with the complexities of modern life in the first world overwhelms me sometimes.
I like to go to numerous shops as they have different vegan items I like. For example Tesco as expensive as they are, seem to have larger vegan chilled stock, and Sainsbury’s have a nice budget friendly chocolate cake, and they also used to stock VFC frozen pieces which hubby loves (and misses).
So, I started trying everyday restaurants and McDonalds is sadly a place I do regularly go. I consume the beyond meat plant burger when I have those cravings, and even my veggie orthodox mother in law likes it.
The weird thing for you but not me is that I flat out REFUSE to eat at KFC and Nandos. Maybe because the murder is in the name and Icon, or that it feels like 1 token gesture on their horrendous menu. Yes, yes I know McDonalds have reduced their menu in the UK, just like most places, including Subway’s Vegan meatballs – which was my other go to for a quick fix that had some vegetables in it as well.

So yes, I know I am a hypocrite, and have caved in to these horrible places. I wish there were tonnes of vegan only options around me wherever I go. Sadly, there isn’t. These are the real-life choices I’ve had to make and I’m hoping that whenever I order their vegan product, it helps boost these sales and offerings and reduce animal agriculture in the long term as well as show how popular and tasty vegan food is to encourage more.
If we had ‘Mr Charlies’ or ‘Temple Of Seitan’ closer to us, believe me I would not entertain the other fast food joints, and I would probably be even more fat than I am, and certainly guilt free!!
I’d love to hear your thoughts, what do you grapple with? The same as us or are you the example we vegans should be following?
